The Temple of Heaven (天坛)
The Temple of Heaven, known as 天坛 in Chinese, is a profound cultural and historical site located in the southeastern part of central Beijing. Constructed in the 15th century, it is a complex of Taoist buildings where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would perform ceremonies to pray for good harvests and blessings for the country.
Highlights of The Temple of Heaven
The site covers an area of about 273 hectares and includes significant architectural structures such as the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar. These buildings are masterpieces of traditional Chinese architecture and are surrounded by ancient and expansive pine woods.
Activities: Visitors can explore the beautifully preserved temples, enjoy tranquil walks through the park's extensive gardens, and observe locals engaging in morning exercises like tai chi, dancing, and playing traditional games.
Transportation: The Temple of Heaven is accessible via Beijing’s subway system, with the closest stations being Tiantan East Gate on Line 5 and Tiantan South Gate on Line 8.
Cost: The entrance fee to the park is about 15 RMB, with a separate ticket required for entering the main temple buildings costing an additional 20 RMB.
